Ah, the bittersweet feeling of graduation! I remember my senior year of high school, walking down the hallways and laughing with friends. Cheering on my school's football team and dancing the night away at homecoming and prom! How I miss the fun and youthful year before "adulting". Now I am a parent of a senior and -oh- how the tables have turned! Watching my son live one of the most transitional years of his life is so bittersweet.
Here are some great tips for 2023 seniors when it comes to a senior photo session:
1. Bring props and 2-3 outfits that you want to wear for the photoshoot.
What is it that defines who you are this year? Is it a lettermens jacket? Is it an instrument or a project you have worked endless hours on? Whatever it is, bring them to your session! I want you to feel comfortable and your best self when you are in front of the camera! This session is to showcase you, tap into your personality, and to create vivid memories of this transitional year.
2. Practice posing!
You know the saying, “practice makes perfect?” Yeah, it applies to photo sessions! Whether you’re camera shy or social media confident, I always advise my seniors to practice smiling and posing for the camera before the actual shoot. From my experience, feeling your best self will reflect in your pictures, so be yourself! Need help loosening up with your posing? Play your favorite music while posing, unclench your jaw, take a deep breath, release the tension in your shoulders- you'll do great!
3. Simple Wardrobe
That bold striped shirt, words in all caps, or your shirt with pictures - leave it home! We want your pictures to emphasize you and clothing that is distracting to the eyes will make you less visible and more eye-tracking to the clothes you wear. I suggest wearing solid-colored shirts, dresses or pants. You’ll want style in your pictures but style that's not distracting to the eyes. You are the main focus of the shoot (not that graphic T).
4. New Hair, Who This?
Trying new hairstyles or haircuts on the day of your photoshoot isn't the best idea! Depending on the weather (talking to you, Oklahoma wind), you’ll want to know what your hair has looked and felt like before. Experimental hairstyles or haircuts won't be a good way to remember years from now, especially with how unpredictable the weather can be. Play with hairstyles a few days before and get a haircut a week or two before to give your hair a chance to adjust and look natural.
5. Speak up!
I want to maximize and enhance your session to your comfort. Let me know what you want to do and what you’re not comfortable doing. I am here for you! Of course, I can give suggestions, but communication is key. If you don’t want to do a certain pose, tell me. I want to help you be 100% satisfied with your pictures!
